I have never had any doubt that the American people could stop Trump and his sycophantic mob from taking total control of our country. Could. I have not always been all that convinced that we Would.
Trump is a bully and a coward, and he is surrounded by more of the same. He has been enabled his entire life. Never held accountable. Never had to pay the price for his many crimes. He is like an eel, slithering away from the grasp of any and every attempt at justice. And when we handed him the keys to the Oval Office again, I was not sure that we would stop him, even though I knew we could if we stood up and united as a country.
It took some horrible events to make it clear to me, but I think now that we will put an end to this awful regime. Don’t get me wrong here, we are a long way from done. These people are cornered, and know what is coming if they lose power. So they will use every tool they have, including more violence and illegal acts, to stay in power. They will be extremely dangerous, and I fear we will witness even more violence before this is over.
But as we have seen in Minneapolis, the American people will not roll over and submit to this fascism. The more they have thrown at the people of Minnesota, the more people have shown up in many different ways to fight back. Neighborhood watches, protesting, mutual aid networks, food and medicine delivery, and the list goes on. And these same types of organization and networking took place in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, D.C. and others earlier in the year, and is happening now in large cities and small towns all across this country. Millions and millions of people are joining in, everyone contributing what they can, when they can, how they can.
In the horrible videos showing the murder of Alex Pretti, you saw cowardice and bravery. Cowardice in the form of a mob of heavily armed immoral men who physically attacked Alex, beat him, and then killed him in cold blood. But you also watched incredible bravery in the form of people armed only with a whistle and a phone, recording these atrocities and proving to everyone who has and will see those videos what bravery really is. They stood their ground, knowing the danger they were in, and recorded the evidence of this murder for the world to see.
And I have seen that same resolve in many people I know. A willingness to spend many hours a day doing the work that needs to be done to fight back. To prepare. To educate and organize and build community. And the willingness to go out in the street, again armed only with a whistle and a phone, and take that risk. Thousands of true patriots are doing that every day. Millions more are getting trained and ready.
Fascists are bullies. They claim power they don’t really have. The true power is ours, and we can claim it back. It will not be easy, nothing worth doing ever is. But we can take our country back. And today, I believe we WILL.
