1/23/2026 – ICE Out of Minnesota: Day of Truth & Freedom (Quad Cities Solidarity Action)

Indivisible Quad Cities and affiliated organizations are encouraging all Quad Citians to support and show solidarity for our besieged neighbors to the north this Friday, January 23, by taking two simple actions:

  1. Pause nonessential shopping for the day, especially at Minneapolis-based Target.
  2. Contact your congressional representatives to demand an end to funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Appropriations bill currently under consideration, or to condition funding on restricting the use of Border Patrol and ICE to conduct dragnet arrest operations in our cities.

Friday, January 23 has been declared “ICE Out of Minnesota: Day of Truth & Freedom” — a statewide pause of daily activity to “stand together against the actions of the federal government against the state of Minnesota,” according to event organizers. The strike is endorsed by a broad coalition of Minnesota faith and community groups, and numerous unions including the local teachers unions of Minneapolis and St. Paul public schools.

“It is time to suspend the normal order of business to demand immediate cessation of ICE actions in MN, accountability for federal agents who have caused loss of life and abuse to Minnesota residents and call for Congress to immediately intervene.”

Why we’re mobilizing

On Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Citing the killing of Renee Good by federal agent Jonathan Ross, the “ICE Out” day organizers say the general strike is intended to be a day of nonviolent reflection. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities.

Indivisible Quad Cities stands with numerous other national and local organizations to call for an end to the militarization of our cities and the impunity being granted to masked thugs.

Note about an in-person rally

A rally in the early planning stages to visibly show solidarity with Minnesota has been canceled due to the extreme cold forecast for Friday.
Instead, we are calling on all Quad Citians to show solidarity through a community-wide pause and calls to Congress.

Take action

  • Do not shop (especially at Target) on Friday, January 23.
  • Call your members of Congress and urge them to:
    • End DHS/ICE funding in the current Appropriations bill, or
    • Condition funding on restricting ICE/Border Patrol from conducting dragnet arrest operations in cities.

Current funding for DHS runs out January 30, 2026.

Our larger context

Since returning to office, President Trump and the GOP have presided over a divisive assault on federal workers, veterans’ benefits, gay and trans rights, the environment, healthcare subsidies, refugee and immigrant rights, the rules-based international order, the truthful history of our racial minorities, and the Constitution itself.

Indivisible Quad Cities exists to resist the federal assault on our rights and freedoms, and to realize the promise of the pledge of allegiance, bringing us back together as one indivisible people.

Nonviolence and safety

**A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events. All events should be held in public spaces or on public property.

About Indivisible QC

Indivisible QC is a local chapter of Indivisible that began operations in East Moline, IL on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2025. Since then, our membership has grown to cover the entire Quad Cities metro region, and we have organized well-attended events like the April 5th “Hands Off” Rally in Davenport, IA, both of the No Kings events in the Quad Cities (June 14, Rock Island; October 18, Davenport), and the ICE Out for Good protest held in Moline, IL on January 11, 2026.  We are a grassroots movement of ordinary citizens exercising our First Amendment rights to call out the destructive, anti-democratic actions of the Trump administration and help build alternative democratic futures.
